The Tall Ships Races Program Kristiansand

During the Tall Ships Races 28th July – 1st August, we want to present the region's rich and diverse cultural life. This will be the region's biggest cultural event ever.
There are over 80 concerts, four outdoor stages, several restaurant venues, children's activities, culture exhibitions, art projects, many different booths for sales and other activities, restaurants, athletic competitions, a Crew Parade through the city streets, street theatre, fireworks and much more.

The port area is open to everyone from morning until night and all cultural activities are FREE!

Wednesday 28th July

On Wednesday rigging of the harbour area continues in preparation for the event. Some of the ships arrive in Kristiansand and we warmly welcome them in the run up to the big event with "the night before the night" and ‘Sommeråpent’ from NRK. The restaurant Havnelageret, in the centre of the festival area opens ‘Summer in the Marina’ with the help of the popular band, Radio Jam, at 19.00.


Thursday 29th July

13.30 Opening of Art Installation "Small Ships Races'
The Art Installation Small Ships Races consist of over 700 bark boats made from 26 kindergartens in Kristiansand in co-operation with the artist Anna Berthelsen.

16.00 Official opening of The Tall Ships Races 2010 Kristiansand
The event will be officially opened by H.K.H. Crown Princess Mette-Marit.
Appearances by: Helene Bøksle, Torstein Sødal, Tori Wrånes, Sørlandet Shanty Choir, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble, and the world's largest children’s shanty choir, Førstereis.

Speeches made by; Mayor Per Sigurd Sørensen, Event Chairman STI, Knut Western and sailor John Arne Reinertsen.

Ceremonies: Jens Olai Justvik.

18.00 The Captain Sabertooth Show
Captain Sabertooth and his men are coming to The Tall Ships Races with their fantastic show! We encourage both young and old to dress up as pirates.

20.00 Concert with Lady Moscow
The ramshackle folk rock band Lady Moscow is pure entertainment and a joy of life. Do not miss one of the very best and most awesome live bands.

21.30 Concert with Bjørn Eidsvåg
Experience one of Norway's best-selling and beloved artists. Bjørn Eidsvåg’s band brings Thursdays’ program to an end from the main stage.

Friday 30th July

9:00 Athletics for ships crew
Friday is the big sports day! The crews of the ships will be competing in various sports at different venues around the city.

10:00 The harbour area opens
Come and enjoy the Children's Tall Ships Races, art projects, coastal culture exhibitions, restaurants, retail booths, stands and open vessels.

12.00 Distribution of Erik Byes Memorial Prize
Erik Byes Memorial Prize is awarded annually by the Protest Festival. This year, they want the ceremony takes place in conjunction with The Tall Ships Races. Erik Byes involvement within maritime is widely known.

16.00 Crew Parade
With the colourful and entertaining crew parade there will be a carnival atmosphere in the city. Leaving from Øvre Torv, via Kirkegata, Tordenskjoldgata, Markensgata and Tollbodgata, it ends in front of the main stage in the port area.

17.00 Prize Ceremony for Crew Competitions
Award ceremony conducted by the Culture Minister, Anniken Huitfeldt, Mayor, Per Sigurd Sørensen and the Event Chairman of Sail Training International, Knut Western.

19.00 Concert with Helene Bøksle, Kvarts and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra
South of Norway’s songstress Helene Bøksle and folk music group, Kvarts, together with Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra create a wonderful festive concert during the event. Folk music meets symphonic music in this exciting collaboration that can only be experienced during the Tall Ships Races. The concert is sponsored by the AF group.

22.00 Brygge Dance with Åsmund Åmli Band
Join the ‘brygge dance’ on the pier complete with live shows and band.

13.00 Shanty Competition for Crews
The crew on board the ships will be invited to show their shanty singing skills in this singing competition. The competition is lead by our own Full Rigged ‘Sørlandet Shanty Choir’.

17:00 Opening of Sand Sculpture Kristiansand

20.30 Concert with Zwai Mbula International Band
The South African phantom percussionist Zwai Mbula plays a concert with a group of Norwegian and international musicians. There will be an intense hour of African music on stage and dancing on deck for those who feel like it. The concert is held in co-operation with the Kristiansand International Music Festival.

21.00 Summer in the harbour with
Radio Jam and guests
Few cover bands in Norway have had the pleasure to entertain as many people as Jam Radio has had over the years. Charismatic musicians that gives the audience a great musical experience, combined with familiar songs that most people know. Many know the band from the ever popular Summer på torvet, now they will spread some of the same enjoyment in the harbour area with several well-known guest artists.

23.30 Fireworks
We end the evening with a spectacular fireworks display over the harbour and the city.


Sunday 1st August

Events:

9:00 Church Service
The Tall Ships Races invites you, in cooperation with the Church City Mission, to service on board the fully rigged Sørlandet on Sunday 1st August at 0900. The Sørlandet’s Shanty choir joins priest Øyvind Stabrun for the ceremony.

Bring along your own chair if you think half an hour is too long to stand.

12.00 Parade of Sails
The large parade of Sail takes place on Sunday 1st August.
At 10.00 the ships begin to leave their berths and collect in the Western Harbour. At 12.00 the parade of sail will begin, starting out from between Odderøya and Dybingen and continue out in Vestergabet.

17.00 - 18.00 begins the final stage of the The Tall Ships Races’ regatta.
The beginning of the sailing competition which races to Hartlepool is from 17.00 - 1800. They will race from Kristiansand to Hartlepool which lies on the northwest coast of England. 


Cannon museum day, Sunday 1 August 2010
In connection with the Tall Ships Races in Kristiansand the Cannon Museum invites you to the traditional museum gun day, Sunday 1st August.

Meet up to say goodbye to all the great ships participating in this year's Tall Ships Race. Nothing compares to the panoramic views of Vestergabet and the sea, than can be taken in at Møvik Fort. Here you can follow the ships leaving from the port as they file out to Vestergabet to assemble at Songvår fyr on the starting line for the next leg. Remember to bring your binoculars!
